“Smart” watches are growing in popularity and an evolving area of interest to the medical community. Their biosensor technology and wireless data communication present opportunities for their clinical use. Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM), a rare yet significant form of reversible dilated cardiomyopathy, is a leading cause of maternal death in the U.S. Anesthesiologists may encounter PPCM when caring for obstetrical patients. This report describes the first case of PPCM wherein initial suspicion was prompted by tachycardia detected via the patient’s “smart” watch.

Hip bone connected to the back bone: Spinopelvic measurements in hip arthroplasty imaging [Poster session]. Society of Skeletal Radiology 44th Annual Scientific Meeting (virtual). https://skeletalrad.org/ssr-2021-virtual-annual-meeting

The relationship between the spine, pelvis and hip has become increasingly recognized as an important cause of hip arthroplasty complications, including dislocation. This spinopelvic relationship has become an important topic in orthopedics, with an eye toward understanding and preventing these complications. Here we provide an overview of the spinopelvic relationship, along with its various measurements and their application to imaging of the hip arthroplasty patient.
  1. Morris, R.W., Nutter, K.M., Kennedy, D.P., Weatherly, B.B., Carson, J.D. (2021, April 18-22). Coming full circle: Enhancing evaluation of the rotator cuff and labrum using a radial MRI sequence [Poster session]. American Roentgen Ray Society 2021 Annual Meeting (virtual). https://arrs.org/MeetingPortal21

Imaging of the shoulder using a sequence obtained in a radial fashion can help to better visualize the rotator cuff tendons along their course, and particularly at their insertions where most tears occur. The imaging plane is rotated around a point in the center of the humeral head, creating images that are largely parallel to the long axis of the rotator cuff at all imaging points. Similarly, the radially acquired images are optimally oriented to obtain true cross-sectional images of the glenoid labrum, which is instead primarily sectioned obliquely on conventional images. In addition to providing an enhanced evaluation of the rotator cuff and labrum, the radial sequence can also be valuable in education, helping trainees to better visualize and understand pathology of the shoulder.
